Tim Mullen, Ph.D.

Tim Mullen, Ph.D., is a computational and cognitive neuroscientist, technologist, entrepreneur, investor, and artist whose work spans consciousness, brain-computer interfaces, neural signal processing, and human-computer interaction. He is founder and CEO of Intheon, which develops AI-powered platforms for real-time brain and biosignal analytics, and co-founder of Sanmai Technologies, advancing noninvasive neuromodulation. Over two decades, his research at UC Berkeley, UC San Diego, PARC, and through government and industry collaborations has contributed to understanding brain-network dynamics in cognition, health, and conscious experience. He has authored more than 60 publications, helped develop open-source neuroscience tools and standards, and currently investigates the neural dynamics of meditation and nondual awareness. His artwork explores interpersonal resonance, emergence, and relationships between mind and world.

What drew you to consciousness

George Berkeley said it well: “All the choir of heaven and furniture of earth—in a word, all those bodies which compose the mighty frame of the world—have not any subsistence without a mind.” All of reality, including our sense of self, is known only through consciousness, and understanding it is key to human flourishing.
