HEARTBEAM: Heart-Brain Engagement for Adolescent Meditation

Modern adolescents face unprecedented rates of anxiety, depression, and stress-related disorders, yet traditional meditation approaches struggle to engage youth immersed in digital environments.

With funding from the Tiny Blue Dot Foundation, the Institute For Advanced Consciousness Studies will conduct a groundbreaking study aimed at developing and testing a novel gamified neurofeedback intervention that uses heartbeat-evoked potentials (HEPs) to teach mindfulness and interoceptive awareness to adolescents.

Building on cutting-edge research in contemplative neuroscience and cardio-neural interactions, this study introduces HEP-based feedback as a revolutionary approach to meditation training. Unlike traditional “above-the-neck” neurofeedback methods, our intervention integrates heart-brain dynamics through personalized, real-time feedback delivered in an immersive virtual reality environment. Participants navigate a cliff-top landscape where clearing fog and discovering artifacts depends on achieving optimal heart-brain synchronization states.

The research will compare three conditions across 117 adolescents aged 10-14: real-time HEP feedback, sham feedback, and traditional frontal theta neurofeedback. Through four 30-minute sessions over four weeks, we aim to demonstrate that heart-brain integration feedback can enhance interoceptive sensibility, mindfulness, emotional regulation, and overall well-being more effectively than existing approaches.

Sign Up To Be A Participant

If you volunteer to participate in this study, you are between 10-14 years old, speak English, and have no prior meditation or yoga experience.

You will be asked to:

  1. Complete questionnaires about your awareness of body sensations, mindfulness, emotions, stress levels, and well-being
  2. Participate in a heartbeat detection task to measure your ability to sense your own heartbeat
  3. Attend four 30-minute virtual reality sessions over four weeks, wearing an EEG headset and heart monitor while exploring an immersive digital environment
  4. Complete brief questionnaires after each session about your experience and state of mind
  5. Retake the initial questionnaires and heartbeat task after completing all four sessions

All assessments are completely non-invasive and involve no medical procedures. The virtual reality experience involves wearing a comfortable headset and sitting safely while exploring a peaceful digital landscape. You’ll be guided through the process by trained research staff at all times.

Participants will receive compensation of up to $25 in addition to base participation fees, with bonus payments available for discovering special artifacts during the virtual reality sessions.

Each session lasts approximately 45 minutes including setup and questionnaires. You are free to withdraw from the study at any time without penalty.

The study will take place at the research space for The Institute for Advanced Consciousness Studies at 2811 Wilshire Blvd. Suite 510 Santa Monica, CA 90403.
