Research Assistant

Stephanie Abakians’ neuroscience research journey began at UCLA’s Monti Lab in 2021 where she learned techniques such as ultrasound and EEG. She is interested in the intersection of philosophy and medicine.  Currently, she is preparing to apply to medical school.

Your ideal research study

My ideal research study would explore control of the autonomic nervous system. I am curious to know whether implementation of neuromodulation techniques on the thalamus can impact this control. How would this neuromodoluation compare to the use of meditation to control the autonomic nervous system?

What drew you to consciousness

Consciousness combines my two interests: philosophy and neuroscience. I am interested in learning about how neuromodulation techniques can impact states of altered consciousness such as dementia and the vegetative state. What initially drew me to consciousnes was its sheer ambiguity. Researchers and philosophers alike find it difficult to define. The subjective nature of consciousness combined with today’s innovation have led me to consciousness research.
